Server Problems at vibesworkshop.com

Oh man, we have been having many problems. Our ISP company had bandwidth and electrical consumption problems, so servers had to be moved around, then our drive crashed followed by a few other problems.

We are working on it. Each day my partner says this is it and then another problem arises, so I won't do any projections here. We have replaced the drive and we are restoring the OS and the files. So I'm hoping this is our last day of all this BS.

Let us get this settled and then we will next talk to all subscribers and gladly offer refunds to anyone who wants one.

Synth Vibe Sounds!

For the first time in my life I found a great vibe sound that i played with and loved. It’s my favorite… Well that’s not counting my FAVORITE vibe sound which is an accoustic vibe sound!

Over the years I’d get into midi and then out of it. Back in the day I even wrote an ear training program in hypercard. Remember those shareware catalogs you’d get in the mail? It was in a few of them. Man, remember having to look through a catalog for shareware programs and then ordering them through MAIL. Wow!

Anyway I’m getting back into it all again. Got a couple macs and gearing them up with Reason, Digital Performer, Pro Tools and more stuff!

I was using the Mallet KAT with Reason and man the vibe sound on there was GREAT!!! F%^&ing GREAT! At least I thought so!

Any other great digital vibe sounds out there? I would love to have a vibe sound to use with the KAT. I’ve used it for a few different gigs but it’s usually a tool. But I’m excited about this new vibe sound! I felt like I could be expressive with it.

Could be fun to take out the mallet KAT, the Mac and a small amp and be able to do some stuff with it!

Any other good vibe sounds? Anybody using the KAT? I haven’t been able to take it on a jazz gig. I never felt comfortable. I did use it with this group ‘Gerald Veasley and the Electric Mingus Project’. But I would bring my accoustic vibes as well. It would be great to just use this on that gig!

Well any electronic mallet players out there? What do you think?

Someone Discovers the Vibraphone

I stumbled on this blog. It seems this person just discovered the vibraphone and has fallen in love with it.

I just skimmed the page, but it was really interesting. This person put a lot of time in researching and writing about the instrument.

Made me happy to see it!

Here's the blog.

German music publisher Advance Music has just released Exploration in Rhythm, Volume 1, Rhythmic Phrasing in Improvisation by Ed Saindon. This is the first book of a series dealing with advanced rhythmic concepts for the improvisor and composer. Saindon is a Professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston where he has been teaching since 1976 and has developed the concepts addressed in the book through years of teaching jazz improvisation at the college.

Exploration in Rhythm, Rhythmic Phrasing in Improvisation will develop and expand the rhythmic palette and vocabulary of the improviser and composer. The book specifically addresses the concept of over-the-bar line phrasing via rhythmic groupings of 8ths, triplets, 16ths and polyrhythms in 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4. Working on these concepts, players should begin to “hear” rhythms that “float over the barline” as well as develop the ability to execute phrases over longer periods of time. The end result will be a sonic erasing of the bar line and an enhanced sense of freedom with regard to rhythm and phrasing.

“Finally, a comprehensive and organized approach to getting out of the eighth note rut – valuable advice from Ed Saindon on how to vary one’s rhythmic approach.”

- David Liebman, saxist, educator, author, composer

“Ed Saindon gives us a new book, Explorations in Rhythm, containing tons of useful information and great ideas to work on. This is a great resource for enhancing one’s rhythmic facility and expression, something that gets overlooked all too often. In the search for personal expression, this new book is an additional way for the practicer to further his or herself.”

- Dave Douglas, trumpeter, composer, Greenleaf Music. Com

Ed Saindon’s new book provides all the essentials for a contemporary rhythmic tool box. A “must have” for the modern improviser. It puts the “mmmm” in rhythm.

- Hal Crook, trombonist, educator, author, composer

Way Too Funny

Even More on the Deagan

My friend John Keene posted a comment below about the Deagan vibes and mentioned this video on youtube. You REALLY here the distinct difference between Musser and Deagan here.  Read John’s comment below also. It’s in the section about Deagan vibes below.

Wow I never knew that Cal uses sticks like Milt. Why do guys use the short sticks. I’ve used them, they’re fun but I don’t know what the preferences are? Is it closer to the hand or something like that?
